Guided Biofilm Therapy

A cleaning that starts by showing you the plaque, then lifts it with warm water and a fine powder — and saves scraping for the spots that really need it.

What it is

Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) is a cleaning protocol developed by the Swiss company EMS and used by dental practices worldwide. It changes the order of a cleaning: first we make the plaque visible, then remove it gently with air polishing, and only then remove hardened tartar with fine instruments — where it is actually left.

Air polishing uses warm water, air and a very fine powder (erythritol, a mild sugar alcohol) to lift plaque and stains from teeth, between them and just below the gumline, including around implants, crowns and braces.

First we show you the plaque — then we remove it, gently.

The GBT steps

  1. Check and disclose. After a look at your gums, a harmless dye colours the plaque so you and your hygienist can see it.
  2. Show and explain. We show you where plaque collects in your mouth and how to reach those places at home.
  3. Air polishing. Warm water and fine powder remove the coloured plaque and stains.
  4. Tartar only where it’s left. A slim ultrasonic tip removes any remaining hardened tartar.
  5. Final check. We check that all the colour is gone and agree when you should come back.

What it changes — and what it doesn’t

What you gain

  • Most people find it more comfortable than traditional scraping and polishing paste
  • No gritty paste
  • Gentle on gums, implants, crowns and fillings
  • You see your own plaque — the best motivation for home care

Its limits

  • It doesn’t replace a deep cleaning when gum disease has formed pockets
  • Heavy tartar still needs instruments — GBT just reduces how much

Comfort and safety

The water is warmed and the powder is very fine, so sensitive teeth usually feel little. Tell us if you have asthma or another breathing condition, or if you are on a low-sodium diet — the erythritol powder we use contains no sodium.

No. It is removed during the cleaning, and anything left on your lips washes off within hours.

Yes. The gentle warm water and the coloured plaque usually make it easier for children.
